Cross one of the drawbridges onto Christianshavn and the city changes register immediately. Built in the 17th century on a series of artificial islands to the southeast of the historic center, this maritime neighborhood combines the scale of a village with the architecture of Amsterdam and an atmosphere it has spent four centuries developing entirely on its own.
Canals are everywhere. Willow trees trail into the water. Wooden houseboats are moored along the banks — some clearly permanent residences, with kitchen gardens on their decks and bicycles at their gangplanks. The buildings are a mix of Dutch-influenced brick warehouses, now largely converted to apartments and studios, and the low, colorful residential structures that give the area its warmth. Walking the narrow streets on a quiet morning is one of the more quietly pleasurable things you can do in Copenhagen.
Vor Frelsers Kirke provides the neighborhood's most dramatic landmark: a baroque church tower with an external helical staircase that spirals upward to a golden globe, climbable for one of the most spectacular panoramic views in the city. Inside, the church is lavishly decorated and worth the visit on its own terms.
Christiania — the semi-autonomous 'freetown' established in 1971 in former military barracks — occupies Christianshavn's eastern edge and has been woven into Copenhagen's cultural landscape for more than fifty years. Its art spaces, community gardens, and music venues are part of what makes this neighborhood genuinely unlike anywhere else in the city.
The restaurant scene has grown significantly over the past decade, influenced in part by Noma's long tenure here. Several excellent and more accessible restaurants have followed, making Christianshavn a destination for a long lunch or evening meal rather than just a sightseeing stop.
From Indre By it is a fifteen-minute walk or a five-minute cycle across the harbor — close enough to visit easily, different enough to feel like a genuine departure.
