Amager — The City's Forward Edge

Amager does not have the immediate name recognition of Nørrebro or the postcard familiarity of Christianshavn, and this is precisely what makes it interesting. Copenhagen's large southern island is home to some of the most architecturally ambitious urban development in contemporary Scandinavia, alongside a harbor waterfront that has become one of the city's most celebrated public spaces.

Islands Brygge, along the harbor on Amager's northwestern edge, made its name with the Islands Brygge Harbor Bath — a complex of floating platforms and diving towers that transformed an industrial waterfront into a beloved public swimming facility. On summer days it draws a genuine cross-section of the city: families, office workers, competitive swimmers, and visitors, united by the pleasure of swimming in clean harbor water with the Copenhagen skyline behind them. The surrounding promenade has developed into one of the city's most convivial outdoor spaces.

Further south, Ørestad presents a different face entirely. Developed from the late 1990s on former agricultural land, it is an exercise in 21st-century urban confidence: wide canals, bold residential towers, and a concentration of landmark buildings that reads almost as a catalogue of contemporary Nordic architecture. The VM Houses and the Mountain Dwellings by Bjarke Ingels Group have become architectural destinations in their own right. CopenHill — the waste-to-energy plant that doubles as an artificial ski slope and climbing wall — is perhaps the most audacious piece of civic infrastructure in Europe, and justifiably draws visitors who have no particular interest in waste management.

The Amager nature reserve to the south offers meadows, wetlands, and open horizons that are hard to reconcile with the fact that you are still, technically, within cycling distance of the city center.

From a base in Indre By, Amager is a straightforward day excursion — the Metro connects the harbor bath area to the center in under ten minutes — and offers a perspective on Copenhagen that is still catching up with its own ambition.
